Live and Become
(Israel and France, 2005, 140 minutes, Hebrew/French/Amharic with English sub-titles)
In a Sudanese refugee camp sheltering Ethiopians displaced by civil war and famine in 1984, the Israeli secret service has begun Operation Moses, airlifting thousands of Ethiopian Jews to Israel to escape war and famine. In the chaos, a non-Jewish Ethiopian boy is swept up in the exodus. The boy is adopted by a loving, liberal Israeli family. As he acclimates, he confronts racism and sadness, always yearning for his home.
